From the very beginning, since I was a child, barely able to hold a pencil, I had a knack for drawing. When things got tough in my life, I would shut myself in my room and draw or make whatever came to mind. I also believe that it was my creator who gave me my gifts and it is He I have always aimed to please with anything that I create.
I went to Southern Illinois University for a degree in Visual Communications, which is essentially Graphic Design. From that, I was licensed to draw, but it wasn’t until my time spent working for Lighthouse Christian Products Co. that I learned to hone my abilities, Typography, Illustration and simple layout. One of best experiences working for Lighthouse was when I got the chance to direct and create a 5 book series for children called, “Solomon and Friends Learn About…” I enjoyed collaborating with 6 men, who were all very talented in their own right.
Why Playing cards?
At the beginning of 2014, my good friend Chad Parker, told me about his experiences funding projects on Kickstarter. He thought it would be a good fit for me to try my hand at designing a deck of cards. So, I took a stab at it and I launched The Hipters playing cards on Kickstarter a few months later. Well, it didn’t go quite as planned. The project failed to fund, but I learned a lot during that first project. Much of my education came from the community of playing card collectors and cardists at United Cardists.
I quickly got to work on my next project, called the Golden Spike, which was inspired by my youngest child’s love of trains. When I launched and funded the Golden Spike, which was my first successful Kickstarter, I was hooked. I now love to design playing cards and even collect them a little.
